1. Overview: The 3 Golden Rules of Past Participle Agreement in French A2

In French A1, you learned that verbs conjugated with être (the 17 DR MRS VANDERTRAMP verbs) agree in gender and number with the subject (elle est allée), while verbs conjugated with avoir do not agree with the subject. In French A2, you unlock the complete picture of l'accord du participe passé:

Rule 1: Standard Être Verbs Always agree with the subject:
Marie est arrivée. Mes sœurs sont parties.
Rule 2: Avoir + Preceding COD Never agree with the subject—EXCEPT when the direct object (COD) is placed before the verb:
La robe qu'elle a achetée. Je les ai vues.
Rule 3: Reflexive Verbs (Se) Agree with the subject when se is the direct object (elle s'est levée), but NO agreement if a body part/noun COD follows (elle s'est lavé les mains) or if se is COI (elles se sont parlé).

2. Past Participle Agreement with Avoir (When the Direct Object Precedes)

With avoir, ask yourself one simple question: "Where is the direct object (COD)?" If the direct object comes after the verb, there is zero agreement. If the direct object comes before the auxiliary verb avoir, add -e (fem. sing.), -s (masc. pl.), or -es (fem. pl.) to the past participle:

How the COD Precedes Avoir COD After Verb (No Agreement) COD Before Verb (Agreement Required!)
1. Direct Object Pronouns
(la, l', les, me, te, nous, vous)
J'ai vu tes clés (fem. pl.).
Il a ouvert la fenêtre (fem. sing.).
Tes clés ? Je les ai vues.
La fenêtre ? Il l'a ouverte.
2. Relative Pronoun
"que / qu'" (that / which)
J'ai écrit cette lettre hier.
Tu as pris ces photos.
Voici la lettre que j'ai écrite hier.
Les photos que tu as prises sont belles.
3. Question Words
(Quel(le)(s) / Combien de + Noun)
Elle a mis deux robes dans sa valise.
Tu as lu trois romans.
Quelles robes a-t-elle mises ?
Combien de romans as-tu lus ?

3. Reflexive & Pronominal Verbs: Body Parts & Reciprocal COI vs. COD

Even though all reflexive verbs use être in the passé composé, their agreement follows the direct object (COD) rule! Compare these 3 essential A2 patterns:

Reflexive Pattern Is "Se" COD or COI? French A2 Model Sentence Agreement Rule
A. Standard Reflexive
(No noun object after verb)
Se = COD
(She washed herself)
Elle s'est lavée.
Mes sœurs se sont réveillées tôt.
AGREES with the subject (-e, -s, -es).
B. Reflexive + Body Part / Noun
(Object placed after verb)
Se = COI ("to herself")
Body part = COD after verb
Elle s'est lavé les mains.
Claire s'est cassé la jambe.
Ils se sont acheté une voiture.
NO AGREEMENT because the COD (les mains, la jambe) is after the verb!
C. Reciprocal Verbs:
Direct vs. Indirect (à)
Check if the verb takes à:
rencontrer qqn (COD)
vs. parler à qqn (COI)
Elles se sont rencontrées / embrassées. (COD)
Elles se sont parlé / téléphoné / écrit. (COI)
AGREES for COD verbs; NO AGREEMENT for COI verbs taking à!

4. High-Yield Irregular Past Participles & DELF A2 Traps

Adding feminine (-e) or plural (-s / -es) endings is especially noticeable in pronunciation and spelling on irregular past participles ending in a consonant (mis → mise, pris → prise, écrit → écrite, ouvert → ouverte):

Infinitive Masc. Sing. Fem. Sing. (+e) Masc. Pl. (+s) Fem. Pl. (+es)
mettre / promettremis / promismise / promisemis / promismises / promises
prendre / apprendre / comprendrepris / apprisprise / apprisepris / apprisprises / apprises

ouvrir / offrir / découvrirouvert / offertouverte / offerteouverts / offertsouvertes / offertes
faire / direfait / ditfaite / ditefaits / ditsfaites / dites
⚠️ Top 3 DELF A2 & TEF Exam Traps to Memorize:
  • Never Agree with "En": Even when en replaces a feminine plural noun, the past participle remains 100% invariable: Des fraises ? J'en ai mangé trois (never mangées).
  • Never Agree with "Lui" or "Leur": Lui and leur are indirect object pronouns (COI = to him/her/them), so they never trigger agreement: Ma sœur ? Je lui ai parlé et je lui ai répondu.
  • The 6 Common COI Reciprocal Verbs (Always Invariable): Memorize these six verbs that take à quelqu'un and therefore never agree in reciprocal sentences: se parler, se téléphoner, s'écrire, se sourire, se mentir, se plaire (e.g., Elles se sont souri et se sont parlé).

Frequently Asked Questions — French A2 Past Participle Agreement

When does the past participle agree with avoir in French?

With the auxiliary avoir, the past participle NEVER agrees with the subject. However, it DOES agree in gender and number with a direct object (COD) when that direct object is placed BEFORE the verb (via a pronoun like le, la, l', les, a relative pronoun que/qu', or a question word like Quelle/Combien de).

Why is there no agreement in 'Elle s'est lavé les mains'?

In 'Elle s'est lavé les mains', the body part 'les mains' is the direct object (COD) and is placed AFTER the verb, while 's'' means 'to herself' (indirect object COI). Because the COD follows the verb, the past participle 'lavé' remains invariable.

Why do we write 'Elles se sont parlé' without an 's', but 'Elles se sont rencontrées' with '-es'?

In French, we say 'parler à quelqu'un' (indirect object COI), so 'se' in 'se parler' is a COI and never triggers agreement. By contrast, we say 'rencontrer quelqu'un' (direct object COD, without à), so 'se' in 'se rencontrer' is a COD and agrees: 'Elles se sont rencontrées'.
