⚠️ Top 3 DELF A2 & TEF Exam Traps to Avoid:
  • Don't Confuse "Je voudrais / J'aimerais" (-ais) with the Future (-ai): With je, the future ends in -ai (je parlerai = I will speak) and the conditional ends in -ais (je parlerais = I would speak). Always write Je voudrais and J'aimerais with a final -s!
  • Never Put the Conditional Immediately After "Si": Remember: "Les « si » n'aiment pas les « -rais » !" Never write ✗ Si j'aurais le temps or ✗ Si tu viendrais. Always put L'Imparfait right after si: Si j'avais (imparfait) le temps, je viendrais (conditionnel).
  • Watch the "-i-" in Nous (-rions) and Vous (-riez): Compare nous pourrons / vous pourrez (Futur Simple — no i) with nous pourrions / vous pourriez (Conditionnel Présent — with i!). In polite requests with vous, always write Pourriez-vous and Voudriez-vous.

Frequently Asked Questions — French A2 Le Conditionnel Présent

How do you form Le Conditionnel Présent in French?

Le Conditionnel Présent combines the exact same stem used in Le Futur Simple (always ending in '-r', including irregular stems like ser-, aur-, fer-, ir-, voudr-, pourr-, devr-) with the endings of L'Imparfait: -ais, -ais, -ait, -ions, -iez, -aient.

What is the difference between 'je voudrai' and 'je voudrais' in French?

'Je voudrai' (without '-s') is Le Futur Simple ('I will want'), whereas 'je voudrais' (with '-s') is Le Conditionnel Présent ('I would like'). For polite requests in shops, restaurants, and DELF A2 emails, always write 'je voudrais' or 'j'aimerais' with a final '-s'.

How do you form a hypothetical 'si' (if) sentence in French A2?

To express an imaginary or hypothetical situation in the present ('If I had time, I would travel'), use L'Imparfait immediately after 'si', and Le Conditionnel Présent in the main clause: 'Si j'avais le temps, je voyagerais' (never put the conditional directly after 'si').
